Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine that specifically deals with disorders concerning the digestive system. It means the study of the stomach and the intestines. Diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract, which include the organs from mouth into anus, along the alimentary canal, are the focus of this speciality. Physicians practicing in this field are called gastroenterologists. Gastroenterologists perform a number of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including colonoscopy, endoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound and liver biopsy. Some of the most common disorders handled by gastroenterologists include acid reflux, peptic ulcers and diarrhoea, among others. Even though the primary illness of a person stems from other places aside from the digestive system, this discipline may come into the picture when complications involving the gut arise. |
